REVIEW PAUL LEWIS STARTS HIS HAYDN AND BRAHMS JOURNEY WITH ENTHUSIASM AND INSIGHTPaul Lewis, piano Works by Haydn, Beethoven and Brahms, Playhouse, November 1. Pianist Paul Lewiss new odyssey into Haydn and Brahms is off and running four concerts in total for the Vancouver Recital Society, two this year and two the next. After playing a great deal of Beethoven and Schubert over the last decade, this is an inspiring project and a definite freshness and sense of discovery informed Lewiss playing. This first concert was cunningly designed a Haydn sonata on each end with the Beethoven Bagatelles Op. Brahms Op. 1. 18 Piano Pieces in between. What impressed greatly is the way the pianist mixed dramatic awareness, playfulness and lyrical restraint to reveal differences in the two Haydn sonatas, while showing the Beethoven and Brahms miniatures were closer in spirit than one might have thought. Always on display was enthusiasm and that proved infectious. See more. He is already on the way to releasing his third CD for Deutsche Grammophon, following up his debut and Chopin ConcertoBallades discs with a new Debussy recital. Moreover, he is now touring in Asia with Sir Simon Rattle and the Berlin Philharmonic, deputizing for the injured Lang Lang. Worse fates have happened to competition winners and for a pianist that only started playing the instrument seriously at age 1. This concert featured both Chopin and Debussy, alongside Beethoven, and amply illustrated the pianistic virtues we are already familiar with Chos enviable keyboard balance, refined tonal control, and his natural sense of musical integration. Yet it was also revealed where the pianist has room to develop in particular, in not allowing the elegance and prettiness of his execution to override the prospect of digging for real emotions. REVIEW ALBAN GERHARDT AND STEVEN OSBORNE FIND STUNNING MUSICAL RICHES AMIDST ADVERSITYAlban Gerhardt, cello Steven Osborne, piano Works by Bach, Beethoven, Debussy and Brahms, Playhouse, November 5, 2. One always speculates on what special conditions make for a great performance on concert night. Is it the preparation and full absorption of the pieces to be played Is it the synergy between the artists at that moment Is it the electricity in the audience In this case, esteemed pianist Steven Osborne and cellist Alban Gerhardt performed after great difficulties in travel, arriving from different directions with major delays and little sleep and in Osbornes case, little concert dress and only running shoes. Yet they gave one of the most communicative recitals we have seen in a long time. This was rare music making, fully at the service of the composers, perceptive, individual, and transparent with not a hint of the artists intrusion. See more. Review UBC OPERAS ORFEO ED EURIDICE A VARIABLE SUCCESSGluck, ORFEO ed EURIDICE Shane Hanson Orfeo, Elizabeth Harris Euridice, Colleen Donnelly Amor, Orfeos Choir and the UBC Opera Ensemble Chorus, Vancouver Opera Orchestra, Leslie Dala conductor, directed by Nancy Hermiston, The Old Auditorium UBC, November 4, 2. Orpheus has always been a natural subject for operaafter all, he was the demigod of music in ancient myth. But every retelling of his story is refracted though the lens of its own time. UBCs production of Orfeo ed Euridice engaged with the work as a serious opera, indeed, giving a very dark reading of a work in which love ultimately triumphs. It benefitted from an incisive and characterful chorus and, of the three major characters, Elizabeth Harris was the star of the evening, infusing her role as Euridice with strong acting and often beautiful singing. Shane Hansons Orfeo had his moments as well, although his acting left something to be desired. Son Volt A Retrospective Rar here. The problems with the production stemmed from its emphasis on the darkness of the work, and its concept of how to work this through fully. Still, a brave student production of a watershed opera, one which definitely had its good moments. See more. REVIEW BRAMWELL TOVEY CHALLENGES ELGARS DREAM OF GERONTIUS AND SHOSTAKOVICHS TENTHElgar The Dream of Gerontius, Anthony Dean Griffey tenor, Susan Platts mezzo soprano, Nathan Berg baritone, UBC University Singers Choral Union dir. Graeme Langager, VSO Bramwell Tovey, Orpheum, November 6. Shostakovich Symphony No. Jennifer Higdons Percussion Concerto Dame Evelyn Glennie percussion, VSO Bramwell Tovey, Orpheum, October 2. In his last year as Music Director of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, it is only natural that Bramwell Tovey would want to place his stamp on great works that he had not performed in many years or at all. While one would not expect finished perfection under such circumstances, the maestros recent concerts featuring Elgars The Dream of Gerontius and Shostakovichs Tenth Symphony turned out both interesting and substantial. The Elgar built with strength to its conclusion, with the soloists putting forward a fine effort and the large, 1. UBC Chorus securing the most cohesive and inspired output I have yet seen from them. The quality of the orchestral playing was the outstanding feature of the earlier performance of Shostakovichs Tenth Symphony, even if the interpretation might be seen to err on the straightforward side. This is only the beginning of the celebration there is a Bruckners Ninth coming in the spring and much of May and June 2. See more. REVIEW STEPHEN STUBBS AND COLIN BALZER BRING MONTEVERDIS ORFEO TO LIFEClaudio Monteverdi, ORFEO, Colin Balzer, Danielle Sampson, Mary Feminear, Tess Altiveros, John Taylor Ward, Doug Dodson, Eric Neuville, Ross Hauck, Matthew Trevio soloists, Dark Horse Consort, Pacific Music. Works, Stephen Stubbs, conductor, Chan Centre, October 2. Monteverdis Orfeo is an exemplary product of the humanistic spirit of the Italian Renaissance. The moralistic tone of the libretto, the range of singing styles employed, and the lavishness of the instrumental accompaniment suggest a closer connection with the intermedi the spectacular allegorical entertainments presented at 1. North Italian courts than with the public operas purveyed in Venice from 1. Orfeo is also a better candidate for concert performance the presentation given on this occasion   than, say, the same composers The Return of Ulysses to his Homeland or The Coronation of Poppea, whose wordiness and profusion of characters and incidents make full staging necessary for comprehension of the action. It is quite possible to follow the plot of Orfeo without these dressings indeed the concert opera format may reveal the vocal and instrumental richness of Monteverdis musical language more clearly. And that richness was certainly realized in this Early Music Vancouvers presentation, with Colin Balzer in the title role and featuring the expert direction of Stephen Stubbs, leaving no doubt that Orfeo is as relevant and moving today as it ever has been.
